Long before Devin Hester was the NFL’s best kick and punt returner, Brian Mitchell was taking the league by storm as a special teams weapon for the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles. Mitchell was a quarterback in high school and college, but was able to remain in the NFL thanks to his kick returning prowess. Brian returned his first ever kick return to the house in a preseason game. Mitchell won Super Bowl 26 with Washington and is remembered today as one of the best to ever return kicks.
On this edition of the Game Time podcast, I talk with Brian about that memorable run to the Super Bowl, playing under legendary head coach Joe Gibbs and finishing his career in New York with Michael Strahan and the New York Football Giants. Plus, we also discuss Roger Goodell’s handling of the Ray Rice domestic violence case and the future of kick returning in the NFL.
